OpenAI builds ChatGPT system for colleges and universities
OpenAI announced last week a new version of its popular ChatGPT platform built specifically for universities to deploy artificial intelligence to students, faculty, researchers and campus operations.
The new tool is powered by GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest advanced language model designed to be more human-like and process audio and images in real-time in addition to text. An OpenAI press release explains that ChatGPT Edu was created out of the success the company experienced with partnerships with the University of Oxford, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, Arizona State University and Columbia University.
“Integrating OpenAI’s technology into our education and operational frameworks accelerates transformation at ASU,” Kyle Bowen, deputy chief information officer at Arizona State University, said in the release. “We’re collaborating across our community to harness these tools, extending our learnings as a scalable model for other institutions.”
In January, Arizona State University and OpenAI announced the first-of-its-kind partnership to allow the university’s students, faculty and staff to explore the potential of generative AI in higher education.
OpenAI said in a release that the new ChatGPT Edu tool could be used for data analysis and includes “enterprise-level security and controls” at a price that is affordable for educational institutions. Additionally, ChatGPT Edu includes advanced capabilities such as data analytics, web browning and document summarization as well as the ability for institutions to build custom GPT’s and share them within university workspaces.
Institutions using ChatGPT EDU will also be granted higher message limits compared to the free version of ChatGPT. Conversations and data are not used to train OpenAI models, according to the release.
