UC Berkeley names new CIO

The University of California, Berkeley on Monday welcomed Jenn Stringer as its new chief information officer.

Stringer, who previously worked at Stanford University and New York University in various technology leadership roles, has served as UC Berkeley’s associate CIO and director of educational technology services since 2013, and will now lead technology initiatives on campus as CIO and associate vice chancellor for IT.

“Her leadership and collaborative style, as well as her passion for the work, earned her the respect of both faculty and executive leadership on campus,” Provost Paul Alivisatos and vice chancellor of administration Marc Fisher said in a letter to faculty and staff.

During her time at Berkeley, Stringer transitioned the school to the a new learning management system and helped create Berkeley’s academic innovation studio, which allows faculty, researchers, graduate students and academic support staff to share ideas and collaborate on advances in teaching, learning and research.

Stringer helped lead the university’s emergency response to the PG&E power shutdowns last fall and the transition to remote operations and instruction in response to COVID-19. She also helped focus the campus conversation around instructional resilience, according to the university.

Stringer replaced Larry Conrad, who retires June 30.
