UCLA unveils university-wide ChatGPT plans
The University of California, Los Angeles, on Friday announced it’s formed an agreement with OpenAI that will integrate ChatGPT into its academic, administrative and research functions.
The partnership makes a version of ChatGPT Enterprise tailored to the university available to the institution’s students, faculty and staff. According to the announcement, UCLA’s agreement could lead to more universities in the University of California system also adopting the generative artificial intelligence technology.
“We are thrilled to bring this resource to our university and eager to see how Bruins will leverage this tool to foster innovation and drive efficiencies in diverse applications in the coming months and years,” Lucy Avetisyan, UCLA’s associate vice chancellor and chief information officer, said in a press release.
According to the announcement, UCLA plans later this year to call on students, faculty and staff for project ideas involving the use of AI to boost “student success,” research efforts and “institutional effectiveness and efficiency.” The school plans to publish more details this fall.
“We look forward to working closely with UCLA to find the best ways for ChatGPT to support a rich learning experience and cutting-edge research,” OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap said in the release.
UCLA Chief AI Officer Chris Mattmann says in the release that AI can be used for scheduling appointments, maintaining calendars, customizing learning and generating practice materials. The University of Delaware is among the institutions already using AI to mine old content, like lecture recordings, to generate study materials and other learning aides for students.
